Dolphins homeless shelter failure to cost millions?
If one state legislator has his way, the Miami Dolphins will be losing more than just games this season.
State Senator Mike Bennett (R- Bradenton) believes that professional sports teams in Florida should return millions of dollars in tax money for ignoring a 24-year-old law that requires stadiums and arenas to be used as homeless shelters.
Bennett sponsored a bill that a Senate panel voted in favor of on Monday that would force the pro teams to give back money if homeless shelters had not been set up in their stadiums. The bill would also require teams such as the Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars, Orlando Magic and Tampa Bay Buccaneers to purchase tickets for children and veterans to avoid television blackouts.
The original law requires teams that use facilities built with state money to be use those buildings as homeless shelters when they are not being used for specific events. Bennett's new proposal would demand teams repay almost $300 million that they received to help pay for their stadiums and arenas.
Sports franchises in Florida now receive $166,000 per month in tax breaks.
